Parol-Making Contest: It’s beginning to look a bit like Christmas…

[Update: View 2010 Parol-Making Contest Winners >>> ]

I never saw it happening this fast. I meant too soon.

It was just like the start of the “ber” months and as early as in October TV networks were noticeably going the extra mile with choral groups dishing out Christmas songs already in their morning shows.

And now, it’s beginning to look a tad like Christmas. Whew, as the kids say, we are “all in denial.”

Saturday, December 5, 2009 found us at Robinson’s Place Tacloban where Ms. Ludette was made chairperson of the board of judges of a Parol-Making Contest.

Spearheaded by Tacloban City Councilor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez, the contest had eight finalists from a number of entries submitted by participants limited to residents of Tacloban City. The parols (Christmas lanterns) were intricately designed using local, indigenous materials which the contest guidelines highly encouraged. Impressive.

Here’s the scene at the new mall in Tacloban City last Saturday…

  1. Uy… baga tinuray na gud it mall ha Tacloban! And looks like it’s becoming The Center for happenings there!

+ very creative parols…. and yes! super photos!

  2. I wonder what Tacloban will be like in 20 years time….Will it have the hustle and bustle of Cebu? The last time I was there, it was 2001, and it still kind of reminded me of the way it was back in 1979, when I left. I like the improvements since then, but I wish the urban sprawl would take place a little bit away from where we live…..It was nice and scenic before the subdivisions took over much of the rice paddies….

  3. Nice photos as usual, Gerry. I am very impressed by the artistry involved in these parols. And the use of indigenous materials is very appropriate. That makes these parols unique to Tacloban. More power to the organizers of this contest!

  4. these are beautiful handwork lanterns and original filipino ideas made with cheap materials. hope this will bring much attention to all the locals that instead of wasting money buying ugly plastic made from china, why not make lanterns using indigenous materials – original ones and much cheaper.

  5. Which WordPress template are you using?

  6. all are elegant and classy-looking…
