Buyogan Festival gears up for Sinulog 2009

After a long hiatus, the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival 2008 champion Buyogan Festival is all set to showcase their winning form as it joins the Grand Sinulog Parade in Cebu City this Sunday, January 18, 2009.

The Buyogan Festival last participated in the Sinulog more than a decade ago. It’s not far-fetched then to imagine the Cebuano audience and regular Sinulog visitors having the faintest idea of what the Abuyog contingent looked like and how they performed. Most likely it would be a new visual delight for the eyes of the Cebuano crowd when they see the current Buyogan perform on Sunday.

We were in Abuyog recently to witness their dress rehearsals.

A two- time winner and current champion of the Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan, the Buyogan Festival was one of the top 10 finalists of last year’s national Aliwan Festival held in Manila. They will be up against the three-time Aliwan Champion and 2007-2008 champion of the Sinulog Festival – the Lumad Basakanon of Brgy Basak, San Nicolas, Cebu City in the free interpretation category.

The Basakanons, however, could have its attention focused elsewhere as Tacloban’s Tribu Kabatok is also seeing action this Sunday in the same category. Cebu’s pride landed only as first runner-up during the Tacloban Sangyaw Festival held last June 29 where the Tribu Kabatok was declared champion in its matinee performance.

Also participating from Region 8 are the contingents from Dulag, Leyte and Borongan, Eastern Samar.

  1. Good luck to all Leyteños who will be joining this Sinulog Festival… Buyogon Festival may have won the Kasadyaan for 2 straight years but what I see with their performance, it’s a mere combination of different festivals I already saw. Yes, they have a storyline in their routine but one thing is for sure: the story they used was already performed by Alcoy last Sinulog ’08. I do hope judges would still believe with the story and for sure Cebuanos will compare it to Alcoy’s last performance. Since Buyogan was the champion in Kasadyaan, they have to prove to the people that they deserve the title and not merely say that they’re the best tribe in Leyte… Don’t be too hambog, guys. Yes, you have the fame for now but fame is not forever.

Note: After the result is announced, do not protest that you’re supposed to be on that certain position (remember Aliwan last year?). Just accept it… For the ALIWAN 09, good luck din for the province of Leyte.

  2. They’re still using the same costume they used during last year’s Aliwan. Good luck.

  3. THEY WON!!!!!!!

  4. CONGRAGULATIONS Tribu Buyoganon for bagging the GRAND PRIZE of Sinulog 2009 Free Interpretation category… and for proving that Buyogan deserves the RESPECT of those envious and destructive critics…

  5. betamax! ano, natigilan ka no? panalo na kasi buyogan! hehehe well, congrats din sa basakanon at carmen, tapos sa lanao at sa dulag leyte…

  6. Now, the Buyogan has proven that they are the best; they bagged the Grand Champion of the recent Sinulog 2009!

  7. To betamax, thanks for the comment. But for your information, the Buyogan Festival has their own original storyline. They never copied to from Alcoy nor from any other festivals. They have some similarities with Alcoy obviously because they (Buyogan) have Bees (buyog) and Alcoy has siloy – they are insects or mananap but the story is much different.

Buyogan Festival started in 1996 with the same storyline and nothing has changed. Therefore it is impossible that they could have the same storyline with Alcoy Siloy which you mention. Pls take note, they were already the champion of Kasadyaan 2007 (also First Runner-up in 2005 and 2006) while Alcoy Siloy just joined Sinulog in 2008. In addition, pls watch the performances of Buyogan Festival and Alcoy Siloy in the several festivals where they participated in so that you can see the difference between the two grops. Hope this will enlighten your mind.

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Mabuhay Buyogan Festival – the pride of Leyte!

  8. thanks sir gerry for the support.

  9. More power to Mayor Traya, more power to the people of Abuyog!!! Go! Go! Go! Let everybody know that you are not only producers of the yummy moron but also has among its constituents the very much talented youth!

  10. Buyogan is the BesT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!kYa pah natin yan!!!!!!!

  11. i’m wondering who the choreographers were and the people behind this fantastic group.

  12. This is a reply to Betamax post on January 14…

Didn’t you know that before Sinulog 2008, when Siloy Festival of Alcoy used the same storyline, Buyogan Festival used the storyline at Pintados-Kasadyaan 2007 where they were declared champion? Why? Simply because both contingents had the same choreographer – Mr. Victor Cuenco. I bet you never did your homework before posting.

Do research before you post, that’s the best advice I can give. Anyways, Buyogan deserves the crown and the crowd loved them. And they won!!!

  13. buyogan deserves to be called the ultimate champion. . .

    congrats, uncle.. .

  14. ..ang galing talaga ng mga taga abuyog…
