Buyogan Festival gears up for Sinulog 2009
After a long hiatus, the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival 2008 champion Buyogan Festival is all set to showcase their winning form as it joins the Grand Sinulog Parade in Cebu City this Sunday, January 18, 2009.
The Buyogan Festival last participated in the Sinulog more than a decade ago. It’s not far-fetched then to imagine the Cebuano audience and regular Sinulog visitors having the faintest idea of what the Abuyog contingent looked like and how they performed. Most likely it would be a new visual delight for the eyes of the Cebuano crowd when they see the current Buyogan perform on Sunday.
We were in Abuyog recently to witness their dress rehearsals.

A two- time winner and current champion of the Leyte Pintados-Kasadyaan, the Buyogan Festival was one of the top 10 finalists of last year’s national Aliwan Festival held in Manila. They will be up against the three-time Aliwan Champion and 2007-2008 champion of the Sinulog Festival – the Lumad Basakanon of Brgy Basak, San Nicolas, Cebu City in the free interpretation category.
The Basakanons, however, could have its attention focused elsewhere as Tacloban’s Tribu Kabatok is also seeing action this Sunday in the same category. Cebu’s pride landed only as first runner-up during the Tacloban Sangyaw Festival held last June 29 where the Tribu Kabatok was declared champion in its matinee performance.
Also participating from Region 8 are the contingents from Dulag, Leyte and Borongan, Eastern Samar.
