Buyogan Festival ’08

Abuyognons certainly have ample reason to be proud of specially during this year’s Abuyog fiesta celebration held last week. As part of its fiesta activities, residents and fiesta guests once again witnessed last August 26 the grand Buyogan Festival – the reigning Champion of the Leyte Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals and among the top 10 winners of the national Aliwan Festival competition.

The festival is a showcase performance of young, elementary and high-school students in their colorful costumes as mystical bees (or buyog from which the town got its name) with magical fairies and “flowers” dancing to the rhythm of local ethnic sounds.

The Buyogan Festival of Abuyog, Leyte is the current two-time Grand Champion of the Leyte Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals – Grand Champion for 2007 and 2008. Buyogan Festival was first runner up in 2005 and 2006. They grabbed the championship from Hilongos’s Alikaraw Festival during last year’s competition and also held on to the title during this year’s Kasadyaan held last June 27. During this year’s Aliwan Festival held May 3 in Manila, the Buyogan Festival, just like its rival Alikaraw Festival, landed in the top 10 winners of the national competition.

Leyte Gulf Travel & Tours’ Ludette Ruiz and ABS-CBN’s Marc Logan were among the members of the Board of Judges together with chairman Toto Cinco and DOT’s Trina Dacuycuy.
